how do you think international k-pop coverage can be improved? there's allkpop, and a lot of people hate, but most of their articles seem like straight translations rather than their own coverage (which is why the content seems controversial at times). there's soompi and koreaboo and some others, but they don't seem as big as they should be.
Soompi has been around for ages. I have friends who’ve been into kpop since the Shinhwa, SES, and HOT days who’ve used that site for their information. They remember having their own blogs like us who would talk about them and spazz here and there. The fact that Soompi has stayed in the same format for most part and is possibly the reason why they aren’t as big as they should be.
Koreaboo is a great site. I actually love it myself, easy to navigate, and articles that are translated that does not seem bias in one way or another. The translations seem to play it on the safe side and chooses the words wisely. The issue with them is that they are not always the first to have translated articles.
As for AKP, their issues from the past have seem to taint their repertoire. Their layout is currently a mess, but that’s beside the point. AKP is sought after because of the speed of their translations. Once in a while it has those controversial articles that you spoke of, but it seems, as pointed out from others, that it’s a gimmick to create more traffic for the website. (notice the timing of these said articles) They may be in fact straight translations, but the way it is worded can be misleading.
As for improved coverage…
The issue lies in the actual translations. Depending on who translates the article, it can be skewed or even misinterpreted. It would be very difficult to actually improve in the sense that it would be from the translator.
I guess one way would have Korean sites have their own English articles with their own feelings, or just learn Korean and translate it for yourself.
Honestly, fandoms on Twitter are generally more organized. They retweet almost every information that they can get their hands on. This is where I get the bulk of my information and such. Sometimes it’s straight from the horses mouth (official Twitters and member Twitters)
This was a great question. Thank you.
